Maryland’s first AVA

Just over 10 years after Linganore Winecellars’ first grapes were planted, they made history. Founder Jack Aellen spearheaded Maryland’s inaugural American Viticultural Area (AVA) designation in 1983. As explained by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, “An AVA is a delimited grape-growing region with specific geographic or climatic features that distinguish it from the surrounding regions and affect how grapes are grown.” This means the environment, with factors such as the soil, topography, and climate, influences the taste and flavor of the wines made in its respective AVA. With nearly 1,000 acres of grapes grown in Maryland, this allows winemakers and consumers to delineate the wines’ origins.

Today, the Linganore AVA is home to six wineries. Cabernet Franc and Albariño are some of the more prominent varieties from the region. Creating the Linganore AVA designation was a testament of Linganore Winecellars’ dedication to showcasing the Maryland wine community’s unique essence. From our continuous devotion as second and third generation-run, the winery still represents one of the best wineries with some of the most divine wines in the state.
